York Floods. HFF

01 Feb 2004 7 8 443
An old photo from 2004 showing the River Ouse in flood (which happens there most years, usually in February). Very low resolution by today's standards.....I can't remember which camera I used but I think it was an Olympus AZ-1 compact which only had a 3 megapixel sensor. SEE NOTE. Processed with Nikon Capture NX2 and Pixlr Editor.

Macro test.

03 Mar 2020 3 1 301
A test shot with my new macro lens which I received today, the AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 from Nikon. I got this lens in "used but mint" condition for 1/3 of the normal retail price so I'm very pleased with the results so far. It can also be used as a standard / portrait lens.....with a Nikon APS-C (DX) camera it produces the same field-of-view as a 90mm lens would on a full-frame camera. (The coin is "Royal Arms" issued in 2019 by the Royal Mint). Camera: Nikon D500 Lens: AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 Software: Nikon Capture NX2 (unprocessed except for a slight crop).

Another view of the 19th Century gasholder at Brierfield in the North-West of England (please see previous photo for more details). This viewpoint gives a better impression of the size of this structure. Victorian Gasometer (1 of 2). HFF.

23 Feb 2020 9 6 546
A relic from the days before North-Sea Gas....the old "gasometer" at Brierfield in Lancashire, North-West England. HFF to all viewers. "This gasholder was once part of the Brierfield gas works, built during the second half of the nineteenth century by Henry Tunstill, the owner of Brierfield Mill. It was purchased by the Nelson Local Board in 1888 to meet the growing needs of the rapidly expanding town. The works have long been demolished and the only remaining element is the tall Victorian gasholder with its ornate detailing. The gas holder was constructed of cast iron and worked to produce an elegant design with slender components and ornately detailed finials. The strength provided by the material allows the gas holder to be of considerable height whilst retaining this slender form". "Singing Ringing Tree". HFF

21 Mar 2015 15 13 491
Burnley's Panopticon 'Singing Ringing Tree' is a unique musical sculpture which overlooks Burnley from its position high above the town on Crown Point. Constructed from pipes of galvanised steel stacked in layers, this Panopticon takes the form of a tree bending to the winds and harnesses the energy of those winds to produce a low, tuneful song. In June 2007 Singing Ringing Tree was named winner of a National Award for architectural excellence by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). www.visitlancashire.com/things-to-do/singing-ringing-tree-panopticon-p66560 VIDEOS.....see links below. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpAhRxqibT0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve6PTrlLGOU

Fishing for mackerel at South Shields pier in the North-East of England, photographed during the Summer of 2008. The rusty fence has since been replaced with a modern (but less colourful) one. We didn't have much luck.....I only caught a small eel and my friend Dave (in the photograph) caught nothing but it was still a pleasant way to spend a few hours. HFF everybody :-)

The "Wishing chair" (a.k.a. the "Magic chair" / the "Living chair") is one of the Pendle Sculpture Trail creations in Aitken Wood near the village of barley in North-West England. I'm not sure what the "official" name of this sculpture is but, whatever the name, it provides a great place to take a rest after climbing the steep path to the woods. Camera: Nikon D500.
