Saturday Self Challenge: Metaal

– – –

In Dutch a bicycle is sometimes referred as a ‘stalen ros’, which literally means ‘steel steed’. So, ‘steel steeds’ in a double decks bicycle rack near the Centraal Station in Amsterdam. Most bikes in the rack do not have gears and that is quite common in The Netherlands.
Today there are the unofficial Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships which uses bicycles without gears. These championships can only be held on a day like this, a storm with a force of 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale (75-102 km/h) named ‘Ciara’ is blowing today. Due to the storm many other events are cancelled but this one will take place.

I love this image, Diederik. An excellent choice.

That's a fascinating and crazy sport. I like it! I sure wish we had places nearby to ride like this. We only have dangerous roads and highways around here.

Too much bikes. Specially for where I live, tourist think because they are on hollidays that traffic rules don't apply to them and it is hell when you drive, they come from everywhere, driving against the flow... a real danger.

As usual, a small minority spoil it for the big majority. That is everywhere the case and tourists are no exception. Many people living in Amsterdam cycle everyday: to and from work, study, shops, cinema, pubs, commuting, visiting others, go to the park, sports etc. Near railway stations are big shelters like this, many people cycle to the station to go further by train and park their bike here. Most tourists put their rented bike where they stay.

Point is that in Holand if you do not respect the traffic regulations you get a fine. But the same Dutch when they come here disrespect our rules and if we tell something I dont even want to write what the answer usually is... and that is a great % of them. I speak about Dutch because it is the foreign nationality we have the most here in Monte Gordo. I believe that the fact of being in hollidays triggers that behaviour. One finishes fed up with that kind of disrespect when living in a touristic area (or a before so quiet place that became a mass tourism one like here...) and you have to stand that all year round...

At this place there are a dozen racks for bicycles, around the stations there are more shelters. Many train travellers put their bike here.
