One hundred years ago World War One came to an end. The Netherlands were neutral, but it felt some consequences: one million refugees were housed (on a population of 6½ million) and fuel and food was rationed and standardised. The ‘eenheidsworst’ (standardised, unitary or uniform sausage) was introduced as all meat had to be made into that kind of sausage. The word ‘eenheidsworst’ still stands for something of low quality and/or always the same and without variation.
Twentyfive years later The Netherlands were in the middle of the Second World War and was occupied by Nazi-Germany. In the night of 1 May 1943 a bomber crashed on this location. The whole crew died.
In 1943 it was still Lake IJsselmeer here. In 1959 works started to reclaim Zuidelijk Flevoland (Southern Flevoland). In 1968 the land was completely drained. Ten years later a wreck was discovered during digging works.
To commemorate that a silhouette of the bomber together with a logo of the Royal Air Force and the date was put on to the windmill. In the ground of Flevoland there are still many more wrecks of bombers from the war.
