Sinking Mastodon

Sinking Mastodon
The La Brea Tar Pits was a trap that captured countless animals over many thousands of years. I feel so helpless behind a fence watching this scene re-enacted again by a struggling mastodon.

This photo was taken by a Kowa/SIX medium format film camera with a KOWA 1:3.5/55mm lens and Kowa L1A ø67 filter using Fuji 160NS film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

It is a great reconstitution of one of the animal dramas that happened over there, very emotional. Thanks for sharing, HFF Scott

So much suffering in one place! The tar pits preserve an extraordinary record of the animal life from the past.

The tar pit excavations have given paleontologist a portal to the past regarding the animals who lived here

Indeed it powerfully conveys the terror of the trapped animal that found its demise here and the anguish of its powerless companions who could not help it get out of the pit without risking entrapment themselves.
