Shetland (Caffenol)

Shetland (Caffenol)
HP5+ developed in:

30g coffee (Co-op fairtrade instant),
16g washing soda,
14g vitamin C,
600ml water,

15 minutes at 24C

Insufficient agitation, I guess -
some kind of bromide drag?

, , , have particularly liked this photo

Hi Nori -

Well this was my first ever film in caffenol, and it was really very easy.

(But it smells - really bad..!! And everything goes brown.)

15 minutes was a bit too much. Probably 12 minutes is better.

I don't remember taking this photograph. Not at all.
Glad you like it :-)

Thanks FTTL -

I think the grain can sometimes be exaggerated artificially by scanning the negative directly - film scanners often seem to create a kind of pseudo-grain.

But also, I suppose, with caffenol, there is no inhibitor (unless you make a more advanced recipe with potassium bromide) - so I would imagine that makes the development a bit too fast. Perhaps using a bromide inhibitor to slow things down a bit might help - if you're wanting to reduce grain?

Yes it's nice to be able to decide whether you want big grain or not (although frankly whatever emerges from my development tank is usually something of an accidental mystery - it's a bonus if I can work out where it is, or remember taking it).

Perhaps sodium sulphite might be a good thing to add, for grain reduction:
