The introduction of grain elevators in the early 20th century led to a strike in the harbour of Rotterdam, because many jobs were lost. The Castor dates from 1950. It was built by the Naval Department to serve as pilot ship and as a communications ship during wartime. It could also be used to transport the government out of the Netherlands during an emergency. It suffered from neglect after it was sold in 1984. It is slowly being restored.
