The great lawyer was imprisoned by Maurits of Orange, but he escaped by means of this chest. There is another Grotius chest in Delft.
Maurits isn’t the only one with a dislike for lawyers. During Jack Cade's rebellion Dick the Butcher reportedly said: “ The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers. ”, but Grotius is held in high esteem the world over, whilst Maurits and Dick are all but forgotten.
In 1651–1652 the Dutch ambassador Joan Cunæus and his secretary Cornelis Speelman travelled to Isfahan to stimulate trade in horses and silk. The man on the left is probably the Sultan of Bandar Abbas.
The painting was made by Jan Baptist Weenix (1621-1659). The painting dates from 1653–1659.
