Rijksmuseum Boerhaave – Snellius’ large astronomical quadrant

Rijksmuseum Boerhaave – Snellius’ large astronomical quadrant
It was made around 1620 by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. It could be used to measure the height of heavenly bodies above the horizon. It was made for Willibrordus Snellius, but it was bought by Leiden University in 1633: this was the start of the Leiden Observatory. It was placed on top of the Academy Building.
