Athens 2020 – Choragic Monument of Lysicrates

Athens 2020 – Choragic Monument of Lysicrates
Erected in 335/334 BC by the choregos Lysicrates, a wealthy patron of musical performances in the Theater of Dionysus, to commemorate the prize in the dithyramb contest of the City Dionysia.
It became part of a monastery in the 17th century and Lord Byron slept in the monument during his stay in Athens. The monastery was burnt in 1821 by the Ottomans during the Greek War of Independence. It was restored in the late 19th century.
