Yes, part of the line from Marcilly-sur-Tille to Châtillon-sur-Seine. Opened in 1882, closed for passengers in 1969 and for goods in 1980.

Thanks.

Same period of closure for passengers as England, utter madness, and even more so post 1980 by ripping the line up completely.

You cannot keep a line open without passengers or freight.

Just because something is not in use does not mean it should be destroyed, that was and still is short-sighted accountancy mentality.

It would have been far more sensible to 'mothball' lines so they could be brought back into use as and when conditions changes, as indeed they have, just consider the cost of rebuilding the network now they are needed to ease the congestion on the roads.

If you don't use a railway, it deteriorates quickly, it will require rebuilding if you want to use it again, even if the tracks are still there. As long as the railway bed isn't built upon if the need arrises, but I don't think congested roads are a problem in this area of France.

It's the amount of road freight on juggernauts I was referring to, and a lot of that freight would be better on the railway.

Consider how many HGV's load one train could carry, the saving on fuel by not using the HGV's, the savings in drivers wages etc, it makes no sense to use lorries for bulk deliveries ergo it makes no sense to rip up railways.

In the Netherlands a new freight railway was built from the harbour of Rotterdam to Germany (only the Germans have to build the connecting line) and there is investment in the canals. These rural lines are difficult though, not enough passengers or freight to make them work. It did work in the olden days, because either there was no alternative or the alternatives were slow.

Some of the rural and smaller lines in the Netherlands have been converted into light rail or metro lines, so it is cheaper to run them.
