He landed on the first wave on Utah Beach. When they discovered that they landed on the wrong spot, he said: ”We’ll start the war from right here!” He was 56 at the time and suffering from a heart condition and arthritis, making him to walk with a stick. He requested to be buried with his men and next to his brother Quentin, who was killed in World War I.

I am probably old fashioned but I think that marker being different to the rest is simply wrong.

He had a Medal of Honor bestowed on him. All the bearers of the Medal of Honor have such a marker. It is not a indication of rank.

I know, but it still doesn't seem right, no disrespect to the man for he was evidently a courageous bloke.

On our VC holders graves the regimental badge is replaced by a symbol of the VC so it is apparent to the discerning but overall it blends in with the rest of the markers.

Like I say I am probably old fashioned with an out of date view on how things should be done.

More likely a difference of culture between the Americans and the British. Americans can be a bit more ostentatious I think ;-)

It is best not to be dependent on somebody else. I just read a biography of our first king William I. Between the years of 1795 and 1813 he wandered around Europe and he begged and grovelled Napoleon for some compensation for the loss of Holland.
