These are glazed earthenware tiles, used to decorate walls. Tiles were durable and could be easily cleaned, so they were often used in kitchens (and still are). Decorated tiles were popular, not only general decorations, but also Bible stories, certainly in protestant Holland, with its emphasis on the Word. Of course the tiles could also be used to tell people who couldn't read about Bible stories.
