Broekdijkmolen in mourning
The position of the sails can convey a message. This position, slightly past the middle, is the position of mourning (in the South East of the Netherlands the sails are just before the middle to indicate mourning). Windmills all over the Netherlands have been in this position for the victims of the MH17 flight crash.
Originally the Broekpolder was served by a mill from 1625. That one was destroyed in 1840, after which this new mill was built. After a storm and a fire in 1972 that mill was rebuilt with the aid of a mill from Haarlem. Because the polder is quite small now, this mill has an easy life.
