Never seems much traffic, are these three lane roads really necessary I wonder.

Most roads in the UAE are wide so that they don't have to widen them later if the need arises. I suppose that in the mountains slow-moving lorries might be a problem, so an extra lane might come in handy.

On Bing maps you can see that this road is being built.
