House Berbice in Voorschoten
This estate was first mentioned in 1367. The house dates from 1669. Originally the house was named Almansgeest, but in 1827 the owner jonkheer Goldberg named it after a colony in South America of which he was governor. Berbice is now in British Guyana.
The last occupant mrs. R.J.M. Begeer, was buried on the grounds of the house, so that she could possibly block a road through her land, even after her death. The new road is planned around her former house, but the lower ground water level might still present problems for the house and the trees.
