Drain cover of L.J. Enthoven & Co of 's Hage
The history of this firm starts in 1823. It was called E.B.L. Maritz & Compagnon. The compagnon (partner in business) was Lion Israel Enthoven, who was born in The Hague in 1787. Enthoven bought the firm in 1848 and it was called Metaalpletterij L.I. Enthoven. Later Enthoven changed his name into Leo John Enthoven, not to suffer from antisemitic prejudice. The firm changed its name accordingly: Metaalpletterij L.J. Enthoven. Enthoven made many bridges in The Hague, also the iron roof of the station Hollands Spoor in The Hague. In its heyday it employed 800 people.
Enthoven moved to Delft in 1904, so this drain cover can be dated from 1848 to 1904.
