Silver Coins
After the Romans left Scotland they determined to keep the frontier and their territory south of Hadrian's Wall secure. This huge hoard of silver coins, equivalent to more than ten year's pay for a normal soldier, was given as a bribe or gift to a powerful chieftain to encourage him to keep the peace in the years immediately after the Romans abandoned their occupation of Scotland.
