Overlord Hangar (2) - 24 December 2018

Overlord Hangar (2) - 24 December 2018
In more than 10 years in the Lee on Solent area, I have viewed with mixed feelings the developments at the erstwhile Lee on Solent airfield, formerly RNAS Lee on Solent (HMS Daedalus) and now Solent Airport. Most of the changes are positive; they are indeed creating a brand new Daedalus but there is sadness too in seeing some of the history disappear. The original site was very large and much now lies beyond the boundaries of the present day airport. Commercial development is much in evidence and still growing. Construction of a mercifully modest number of houses has begun. The arrival of CEMAST and the Fareham Innovation Centre are well documented in my photostream.

Amongst the surviving buildings but not, I believe, for much longer is the Overlord Hangar, a Bellman Hangar dating from 1939 (the design having originated in 1936). It is, apparently, in poor condition, perhaps beyond redemption but it will be sad, nevertheless, to see it go.
