Shipwrecked - 6 August 2016
'Shipwrecked' ('Haaksirikkoiset') (1897) by Robert Stigell, bronze.
A first impression might be that it is slightly tasteless to juxtapose a sculpture with this title with a ship in Helsinki's harbour. In fact, the work is believed to have no connection
with any maritime incident or, indeed, any victims of the sea. Instead it is thought that the artist created a work as a metaphor for some of the trials of life.
The cruiseferry Silja Symphony is viewed from the sculpture's location in Tähtitorninvuoren Puisto.
