The reason we were in Akaroa was because cruise ships were not able to call at Lyttelton for Christchurch following damage to the port (and a wide area including Akaroa itself) caused by the 2011 earthquake. This, in turn, followed a 2010 earthquake which had also damaged the port town.
Evidence of the continuing repair programme was to be seen at the Akaroa Service Centre which is housed in The Old Post Office (1914).
I should say that to go to Akaroa was a strange kind of good fortune as it is extraordinarily beautiful as is so very much of New Zealand. I had limited expectations of my five destinations in the country but now I have firm intentions of going back.
