Emerald Lake - Yoho National Park

06 Jul 2023 84 64 311
Undoubtedly Emerald Lake is the main attraction of Yoho National Park. And, mainly, the blue and turquoise color is the principal reason to make this lake considered as the jewel of the Canadian Rockies. The first non-indigenous person to set sight on Emerald Lake was Canadian guide Tom Wilson, who stumbled upon it by accident in 1882. A string of his horses had gotten away, and it was while tracking them that he first entered the valley. The lake had an impression on him: "For a few moments I sat [on] my horse and enjoyed the rare, peaceful beauty of the scene." It was Wilson who gave the lake its name because of its remarkable color, which due to a different rock type producing the sediment that is suspended in the glacial water, reflects the green spectrum of sunlight. Takakkaw Falls - Yoho NationalPark - HWW

05 Jul 2023 76 44 254
Featuring a total height of 373 m and a main drop of 254 m, the Takakkaw Falls are the second tallest waterfall in Canada. Fed by the frigid waters of the Daly Glacier, these breathtaking falls are at their peak in the late spring when an increase in the volume of meltwater creates a powerful effect. The name Takakkaw comes from the Cree people, who named the “wonderful” or “magnificent” in their language, and they are absolutely right! View fullscreen if you like!

Gastown Steam Clock - HWW

02 Jul 2023 62 45 194
The clock was built to cover a steam grate that was part of Vancouver’s distributed steam-heating system. The clock was built as a way to harness the steam and to prevent street people from sleeping on the spot in cold weather. A plant adjacent to the Georgia Viaduct generates the low-pressure steam that powers a miniature steam engine in the base of the clock, which drives a chain lift that moves steel balls upward, where they are unloaded and roll to a descending chain. The weight of the balls on the descending chain drives a conventional pendulum clock escapement, geared to the hands on the four faces. The steam also powers the clock’s sound production, which uses whistles to to signal the time and produce the Westminster chime. Each 1/4 hour the clock sounds the chimes on 5 brass steam whistlers. 1 pip on the wall!
