View from the Oppidum de Berniquaut

View from the Oppidum de Berniquaut
The Oppidum de Berniquaut is situated between the communities of Sorèze and Durfort in the Département du Tarn, Occitanie, on the northern edge of the Montagne Noire, with its highest point at 568 metres. Its history of settlement reaches back more than 30 000 years into the Neolithic. The site hasn't only served the Gaul as a naturally protected area of settlement until the Pax Romana, but we also know of the existence of a castrum with several hundreds of settlers in the Early until High Middle Ages. Closeby a large medieval mining site revealed the exploitation of iron hydroxide in the limestone plateau during the period of settlement.
