Bosa, by the river Temo

Bosa, by the river Temo
Bosa is the only town in Sardinia which can claim to have a real navigable river. It lies in the north-westerly coast and recently has become a tourist destination for its lovely beaches. However the old town has some pretty historical buildings, churches and a medieval castle in ruins.

Chris Drinkwater, Yvonné Lizzy Bruni, Maria Zarębska, Lorenzo Kjell Salmonson and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

What makes this scene so charming? Perhaps the bedding airing on the balconies?

Well, you should say it. To me the bedding airing on the balconies do not have any appeal... and I find the image somehow attractive in spite of the light being too strong (I always arrive at the places at the wrong hours... (:-)

Sì, la Sardegna è una delle regioni più povere d'Italia. Alcune case qui sono state ridipinte ma la maggior parte mostrano i segni del tempo e della trascuratezza.

The light is strong, but you have managed to cope with that well (something I have problems with). The area does look charming, and the buildings. As for the bedding/laundry, I can imagine it is easy to air or dry linens like that (looks quaint) but I can understand an opposite view.

I like the pastel colours used for the house exteriors, but repainting must be difficult...

To sail up there, and anchor up must be a delight...

1) Laundry. In south Italy, especially in small towns and villages it is customary or very common to air it on balconies and outside windows. So to me this this is not an "exotic" sight (even if one cannot see them where I live where it's considered lower class and so "not proper").

2) Strong light: I really hate that light but I often arrive in the places at the hottest hours and fearing not to have another chance to photograph the place at a different time, I resign myself with shooting anyway... then when I get home and see the results I call myself an idiot! (:-)

Here I had the chance to go back in late afternoon and the light was much better. Still I stubbornly work hard to improve this kind of photos with photoshop. Over the years I learned some few simple tricks: decrease the blacks (which make the image looks "heavy" and hide the details, decrease a bit saturation, balance the colours with the colour balance tool, you can't imagine how just minimal trimming can produce a better and more natural image. Often my camera in these conditions produces too much magenta which makes the photo look horrible. And finally to brighten a bit the shades and decrease the hight lights. This last operation is a very delicate one and must be done opportunely otherwise you get an unnatural aspect. It took me years to discover the right way... so after all that work I can't keep the photo buried in my archives and so I post it here!!! (:-)

2) Sail up there. Yes, it would be nice. But only the last 500 m or so of the river is navigable for sailing boats with a deep draught, while the town lies about 5 km from the sea. But there is a nice marina at the mouth of the river. Then you can row to town with your dinghy.
