Die Kirche ist ein stattlicher, sorgfältig ausgeführter Bau der Backsteingotik, entstanden in der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts. Sie war der kirchliche Mittelpunkt der Priorei Eixen (frühere Schreibweise von Eichsen) des Johanniterordens.
