Mosaici Bizantini a San Vitale -Ravenna

The lunette with the stories of Abraham presents two distinct episodes concerning the Old Testament Patriarch.
In the scene on the left, Abraham welcomes three mysterious pilgrims, sitting at the table set with three loaves of bread, and serves them a calf, represented here with reduced proportions. Behind the old man, his wife Sara listens, unseen, to the incredible announcement of the three men: she, despite her advanced age, would become a mother. The pilgrims, dressed in the same white and equal white robes, are a Trinitarian divine manifestation (in other words, they are a direct manifestation of God), and their iconography recalls that of the Byzantine icons of the Trinity.
The scene on the right instead shows the climax of the Sacrifice of Isaac, when Abraham, obeying God's order, is ready to sacrifice his only son. With his right hand he raises his sword, while with his left hand he caresses his head, as if to reaffirm that his love as a father did not fail. But the hand of God already comes out of the clouds to stop him. At the altar, a ram is ready to take Isaac's place to be sacrificed.
