Entrance to the restored Ice house.. 'Hardwick hall'

Entrance to the restored Ice house.. 'Hardwick hall'
Ice houses can be found all around the world.. here, a short tunnel takes visitors to the door of the ice house at Hardwick hall.. built by 'Bess Countess of Shrewsbury' 1597.
The newly restored gate reads....
''As the ponds froze in winter - ice was taken from the top and packed into this ice house.. The ice prolonged the life of the food - creating the first refrigerators''

, Rosalyn Hilborne, Ste, cammino and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

We still have one of the first refrigerators, David. It's from my parents from the 1930 years. I remember very well when the iceman brought a long piece of ice on his shoulder....
