Hanuman sculpture and peacock windows in Patan
| 07 Oct 2010 |
|
The beautiful peacock window carving is typical Newa art. Some windows 200 years and older.
Hanuman is a Hindu deity, who is an ardent devotee of Rama, a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana. A general among the vanaras, an ape-like race of forest-dwellers, Hanuman is an incarnation of the divine, whose fate it is to aid the hero Rama in the struggle against the demon king Ravana.
The Newa people leaving in Patan practice both religions Hinduism and Buddhism. No many people know of Buddhist Newa people and answer that I'm wrong.
According to the 2001 Nepal Census, 84.13% of Newars were Hindu and 15.31% were Buddhist.

Traditionally, the Newars are an urban people with farmlands and farmhouses located on the outskirts of the cities and towns. In Patan town the majority are Newar people.
Although it is widely believed that Newars are native of Kathmandu valley only, there are significant historic Newar settlements outside the valley where Newars still have a large population.

The name "Janmaadya Jatra" does not appear in the search results; however, two similar-sounding festivals in Kathmandu are the Jana Baha Dyah Jatra (or Seto Machhendranath Jatra), a chariot procession for the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and the Indra Jatra, the biggest religious festival in Kathmandu with chariot processions for the goddess Kumari and displays of various deities and demons.
