High up in the rocks people dig caves to store the bodies of their relatives. In their tradition the sky burial is common. A human corpse is cut into small pieces and placed on a mountaintop or this caves, exposing it to the elements or the mahabhuta and animals – especially to birds of prey. In Tibetan and Thakali the practice is known as jhator, which literally means, "giving alms to the birds."

The Thakali are ethnolinguistic group originated from the Thak Khola region of the Kingdom of Lo Mantang in Nepal.
