Roadside bench

05 Apr 2025 26 26 394
Taken out on the plains of western Queensland, somewhere between Betoota and Birdsville. This area is now under vast flooding - about 1 million sq km, link to map from "The Guardian" : four times the size of the United Kingdom, larger than France and Germany combined, and larger than Texas. This is the largest flood in this area on record and follows an extreme weather event with many places having more than their annual total rainfall in four days. Because the area is so large and flat, the floods are likely to take months to flow away inland to Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre.. Update: Thanks to my ipernity friend PAM_J, here's another link with a photo of some of the flooding. Well, at least it was dry when this was taken, so Happy Bench Monday, everyone.

Ilfracombe Machinery Mile

20 Oct 2023 40 36 600
Ilfracombe is a 'blink and you will miss it' village with the main road passing through. To add interest and give travellers a reason to stop, they have this roadside museum of old equipment. ADDITION: I've just done some homework I should have done earlier, it's called the Machinery Mile. Yes, there are some fences. So, although the world doesn't seem that way, I wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a peaceful weekend.

The roadside factory

03 Oct 2020 22 13 282
Just after leaving Pakse, in southern Laos, we saw a roadside workshop where agricultural tools were being made from scrap iron with basic but imaginative equipment. The first PiP shows the forge for heating the iron - essentially an electric blower put to imaginative use. The second PiP shows the anvil - something of a concern, it is a "recycled" 125 mm artillery shell !

Letterboxes

19 Nov 2018 28 21 756
More roadside letterboxes. These are down the valley south of Braidwood. The postman travels only on the major road and properties off on side roads have rather personalised letterboxes grouped where the sideroads enter. I think Pam might enjoy this. In the late 1860s, this was the area where the Clarke bushranging gang mainly operated, with the tacit support of their friends and relatives. In late 1866, frustrated at their lack of progress, the Special Constables (see previous images) began to arrest many of those people on charges such as receiving stolen property, harbouring criminals, etc.

The guard dog

Yes, at property 1887 on this road, Pluto even carries a rifle as part of his guard duties. :-) Another in my series on Australian roadside rural letterboxes. Explored.

Billy goat box

I haven't posted a letterbox image for a while. Today, while travelling, we passed this billy goat letterbox that was too good to resist. :-)

By the roadside

I thought it about time to resume my series on Australian rural roadside letterboxes.

More letterboxes #2

Continuing with another of my series on Australian rural letterboxes. And, as it's now Friday, HFF to all. :-) Explored.

Emus following a roadside fence, out 'back of Bourke'. HFF.

It's Garbage!

21 Feb 2014 10 24 978
Local "Landcare" volunteers sorting bags of garbage collected alongside nearby roads, as our contribution toward "Clean Up Australia Day". Officially it's 2 March, but because of other commitments we brought our local effort forward. Taken with SMC Pentax 1:1.4/50.

Roadside Flower

27 Jan 2014 9 13 621
These colourful flowers were alongside the road at several points in western Tasmania. A Tasmanian garden nursery has since confirmed my suspicions that they are garden escapees.
