View across various fences to the Tollgate Islands, given their name by Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook when he mapped the east coast of Australia during his explorations of 1770. Happy Fence Friday and have a great weekend, everyone.

250 years ago today (22 April 1770), Captain Cook and the ship "HMS Endeavour" came past here, mapping Australia's east coast and naming those islands the "Tollgates" and the waters inshore from them "Batemans Bay" (the latter very possibly after Nathaniel Bateman, under whom he had served on the ship "Northumberland" in Canada).
Apparently the local indigenous Yuin people, who had been here for some 50,000 years, were watching with some concern as the strange object went past on the ocean. It also is possible that Cook was not the first European along this coast, though that is the accepted history. Best viewed large.
