Australian Magpies normally are peaceful birds, but they become very territorial and protective during nesting season - sometimes (though certainly not always) with people, but always when a raptor such as this Whistling Kite comes too close to the nest. This Kite was being given a very hard time and beat a retreat, after even going inverted to see its attacker (see also PiPs).

The local magpie family are quite comfortable with people nearby. This is one of the juveniles, the indications of that being the grey feathers on the back of the neck and wings (later becoming white) and the grey beak (becoming light with a dark tip).

An Australian Magpie watching as we had lunch under a tree. Perseverance paid off, it eventually received some morsels (see PiP). Explored.
