Copied from a slide taken in 1964 and which had major colour problems - hence the mono conversion. I thought this was worth keeping for historical reasons, as this interesting building has gone and the area totally changed. Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend.
WF2 radar

Copied from an old 1965 slide. This WF2 (WF short for Wind Finding) radar was in a suburb of Melbourne not far from Essendon Airport. It was used to train people such as me and had a range of 200km. I find myself thinking how inappropriate it would now be considered to have such a potentially dangerous beast so close to houses, with just a fence (seen best viewed large) between. In the PiP, a weather balloon launched from the same site, with (from the top) the 350gm balloon, a parachute, the radar reflector and the radiosonde to send back atmospheric data.
Happy Fence Friday and have a good weekend, everyone.

Another colourful wall ornamentation on the Melbourne hotel I showed last week.
HWW and have a good week, everyone.
Times change!

This part of Melbourne's Yarra River is now known as "Docklands", with apartment buildings and glass towers on both sides. Back in 1965 when I sailed from here to the Antarctic (PiP), it was North Wharf and a very busy shipping and industrial area!
Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to follow.
Night tours

While out viewing the Christmas lights in Melbourne (previous images) I was surprised to see these horses and carriages taking spectators around the crowded streets.
Christmas lights

Some Melbourne suburbs have developed a tradition where streets of houses are decorated with Christmas lights. In turn, this attracts crowds of visitors (the nights are warm) and even ice-cream vans! More images in the PiPs. This is the first Fence Friday since I returned from travels, so I hope I'm excused for posting a Christmas set in the new year.
Happy Fence Friday everyone and best wishes for 2024.

In Melbourne I stayed in a newly built hotel with this feature wall, much better than the "standard box" we see too often. Wishing everyone a Happy Wednesday Wall.
Spencer Street

Spencer Street is one of the main railway stations in Melbourne. It was many years since I had visited and I was surprised that not only has it been totally rebuilt, but it now is privatised and called Southern Cross station.
While you await the train (or whatever else), Happy Bench Monday, everyone.
More Docklands benches
| 10 Dec 2023 |
|

|
Melbourne's Dockland area is now full of modernistic high-rise apartment buildings - very much a matter of taste! While you contemplate your views on them, you could rest on the rather uncomfortable looking benches in the foreground.
Happy Bench Monday, everyone, and have a good week.
Docklands benches

These benches in Melbourne's Docklands area look impressive, though I have to wonder how they would be on cold winter days or hot summer ones!
Happy Bench Monday and have a good week, everyone.

The Yarra River in Melbourne was once the main ship docking area, with wharves and low warehouses (see previous image). The shipping now has been moved to the far distance in the main image and the old dock area has been redeveloped as "Docklands" with apartments and offices. See notes for details of the benches.
Happy Bench Monday and have a good week, everyone.
Across the Yarra

The Yarra River flows through Melbourne. It is often known, maybe a little unkindly, as the only river in Australia to flow upside-down, with the mud on top. :-) Looking from the south bank toward the city area.
Another Melbourne panorama

Taken on the same walk as my previous panorama, this one shows more of the new buildings on the south bank of the Yarra River. On the right is the "Polly Woodside", now restored but a rusting hulk when I lived in Melbourne long ago. Also new is the long low building behind, part of the Melbourne Convention Centre. View large.
Happy Fence Friday and have a good weekend, eveyone.

Just back from my travels, the main purpose being a visit to Melbourne. This is a stitched panorama from one of the bridges across the Yarra River. More distant to the left is the city centre, the buildings on the right are all new. View large.
Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a good weekend to follow.

DC3s at Essendon, 1965
| 27 May 2014 |

|
I'm just home from travels and still catching up, so here's a favourite archival image, copied from a Kodachrome slide.
These two DC3s (then still in regular airline use) were at Melbourne's Essendon Airport in 1965. The nearest was owned by Bush Pilots Airways, the other by Ansett - both airlines now long since gone and the airport turned to general aviation following the opening of Tullamarine Airport a few years later..
Superb Blue Wren (female)

This female Superb Blue Wren was jumping around the bushes with the male, so I presume they are a pair. An interesting contrast in plumage! Vivitar 135mm 2.8.

I photographed this male Superb Blue Wren in a Melbourne back yard. They are quite tiny and almost constantly moving. Vivitar (Komine) 135/2.8
