Nella Dan departs

15 Feb 2026 16 12 129
"Nella Dan" headed north from Mawson 60 years ago today, on 15 February 1966, not to return for another year. Copied from an old negative developed at Mawson.

"Nella Dan" off the rocks

15 Feb 2026 10 7 50
Some time ago, I posted an image (clickable PiP) of the Nella Dan hard against the rocky shore of Horseshoe Harbour at Mawson, maintaining her position with throttle at half power because her mooring cables had broken during a 200 kph blizzard. This is an image of her getting moving and being turned with the help of a boat, on 14 February 1966. In the foreground is the Mawson flagpole, flattened by the wind.

Two "Dans" together

From my archives. An old (January 1966) black and white film photo of the "Nella Dan" and "Thala Dan" together at what became Casey Station in the Antarctic.

Geology and ocean

It's a while since I posted in b/w, but this seemed a suitable subject. On the South Coast Walk in Murramarang National Park. Best viewed large. It's time for a Wednesday Wall and there's one on the left. Happy Wall Wednesday, everyone.

Bench in mono

14 Apr 2024 29 25 475
I took this bench image in Kangaroo Valley. It was a very enjoyable trip, but after recent dreadful events both here and in other places, mono best matches my feelings today. Enjoy your benches and let's hope for better times this week. Best viewed on black.

Through the blizzard

13 Feb 2024 24 19 524
Taken at Mawson Antarctica 58 years ago today, on 13 Feb 1966, an unforgettable day. During the previous night a blizzard brought winds gusting over 100 kt (185 km/hr) which broke the mooring cables of our ship, the "Nella Dan" . Before the winds could blow it onto the rocks across the harbour, the captain ordered the engines to "half ahead" and drove her onto the rocks. As an ice-strengthened ship, the bows were able to take this and the engines kept her in place. This was taken on b/w film as I came off night shift, I also later took a coloured image when the wind and drifting snow eased. FOOTNOTE. The following day the ship backed off the rock bank undamaged.

Glebe Island Bridge

05 Aug 2022 35 30 385
Heritage listed, the Glebe Island Bridge is an electrically operated swing bridge built in 1903. It has been unused for over 25 years. Best seen from a local ferry (as here). Although local communities wish it preserved, it is being allowed to slowly decay. Happy Fence Friday and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Bad day at the beach

29 Aug 2021 34 24 566
We've just had a week of fairly wild weather which has churned up large waves and caused extensive beach erosion - as seen here, where the beach has gone and going by the litter it appears that, at the highest, some waves have come up to the seat area. Best viewed large on black. Fortunately the weather has come good again, so I can wish everyone a Happy Bench Monday.

South of Mount Lacey

19 Feb 2021 21 14 477
Looking southward into the Prince Charles Mountains, this is a stitched panorama of the view from our survey point on Mount Lacey (see earlier image with Tellurometer). The distant range is about 30km away (see map in Location). This is best viewed large. The large mountain at the far left is Mt Bechervaise, which some of the better climbers also ascended - note the massive wind scour in the snow alongside it (the scale is better illustrated in the PiP, showing the climbers en-route). Images from old negatives developed at Mawson on our return.

Nunataks

13 Feb 2021 35 18 425
This is a stitched image from several b/w negatives processed at Mawson in Antarctica. Nunataks are small peaks above the surrounding ice and snow terrain. Here the surrounding ice on the plateau is about 1500 M above sea level, so these are actually not so small if we consider what's below. Best viewed large.

VW "Antarctica 3" heading across sastrugi

06 Sep 2012 2 4 655
From an old negative. On the first day of the Spring Trip inland from Mawson, the station's VW followed the tractor trains for several miles. Here it is crossing through reasonably small sastrugi.

Up to the plateau from Mawson

06 Sep 2012 1 708
From an old negative. I've at last found my negatives from Mawson (I used two camera bodies, one with slides one with B/W). So I'm going back to the start of the 1966 Spring Trip from Mawson, showing two tractors hauling caravans to the plateau. Once there, the caravans and sledges were organised into trains. The husky pups really aren't hauling anything. :) Minolta SR1 with Adox film, Auto Rokkor 55/1.8.

Heading away

06 Sep 2016 15 8 1397
Reposted after reprocessing. From an old negative, taken exactly 50 years ago today (9 October 1966). View large. Here the 1966 Spring surveying trip from Mawson is just heading out across the blue ice at the edge of the Antarctic plateau. Taken from the roof of the main caravan. In the distance, several expeditioners can be seen on the ice farewelling us, also the VW following for the early stage. For the next four months, "the world" consisted of just the seven of us.
