Campground dawn

05 Sep 2023 23 18 573
A very pleasant dawn over the camping ground in Boulia, outback Queensland. Best viewed on black.

Claypan at sunrise

02 Aug 2023 27 21 533
The light coloured area toward the horizon is the Bilpa Morea Claypan, apparently the world's largest claypan. Best viewed large. The light aircraft is still heading north as the sun rises (see the PiP for an image a few minutes earlier).

Past the Diamantina

01 Aug 2023 18 11 360
The Diamantina River is one of the major (usually not flowing) rivers of outback Queensland, eventually finding its way to Lake Eyre. Taken on the light aircraft dawn flight from Birdsville.with some light rain showers in the distance as the sun rises.

Past Birdsville Racecourse

01 Aug 2023 18 15 368
On the dawn flight in the Cessna, heading out of Birdsville and past the Birdsville Racecourse at about 1500 ft. The annual race meeting is a major outback event. That's the Diamantina River (also in the PiP).

Kiama sunrise

10 Nov 2022 62 44 916
Sunrise over the harbour in Kiama, New South Wales. Just so I can verify that I do (occasionally) rise early. :-) Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend to follow.

Dawn light

31 Aug 2022 27 15 622
The first rays of sunlight hitting the buildings in Sydney, at the start of my travels. I'm now back again.

Dawn waves

01 May 2022 33 22 549
Early morning sunlight on incoming surf. Looks best viewed large. Yes, there's a bench near the foreground pedestrian. Happy Bench Monday, everyone.

The barge arrives

14 Jul 2019 32 23 798
Far from my Norway series, in the past few days the "big event" for our little town was the arrival of a 3300 tonne barge which will assist with the construction of a large new concrete bridge to replace our current lifting bridge, AFAIK the last such operating in Australia. The barge had to be brought across the Clyde River bar at high tide (about 0300 that day) then under the current bridge at first light. The barge is about half the size of a football field and had well below a metre of clearance from the pylons on either side! View large on black. Explored.

Dawn below

07 Dec 2016 17 8 764
Heading upward with rays of dawn sunlight (and a little lens flare). Best viewed large, maybe while listening to this track. I shall be away travelling for most of the next week and expect to have only limited and intermittent internet. Best wishes to all.

Mallacoota Sunrise

Sunrises usually are at the wrong end of the day for me. :) Maybe view on black? Explored.

Snow drifting off the plateau

30 Jul 2012 677
From an old slide, taken not long after arrival. That's a slightly younger (and slightly out of focus) me standing near the old meteorological office (at that stage used as a store), with new supply boxes still strewn around. This was taken very early in the morning, with the first light colouring the thin cloud and an impressive wall of drifting snow in the distance beyond the Casey Range (itself some 30km away). The scene here is almost identical to that largely blotted out by drifting snow in the earlier "blizzard" shot.

Daybreak, Lake Albert

19 Jul 2013 6 6 930
Daybreak adding colour to the mist and fog over Lake Albert - and some pelicans chasing breakfast. (Probably best viewed on black - press 'Z')

Red wattle bird

17 Jul 2013 4 4 1098
A Red Wattlebird ( Anthrochaera carunculata ) interrupted from its feast on nectar from the gum blossoms. The name is for the red wattles hanging just below where the ears should be. Tokina RMC 200/3.5 .

Foggy dawn, Lake Albert

17 Jul 2013 9 2 893
As dawn arrived over the lakes, intermittent fog and mist rolled past. (Suggest view on black).
