Copied (also PiP) from slides taken June 1971 on the Oodnadatta Track - see the notes with my previous image for more detail. Shortly after seeing the stockmen going out mustering, we were surprised to meet this camel-drawn wagon following with their supplies and camping gear. Camels had been used here extensively in the past in desert areas, but even in 1971 this was rare. Noting that the driver is on a (very basic) bench, I'll wish everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to follow.

Australia has a range of feral animals. Feral goats are one such species - these were near the Queensland border in western NSW. See also PiPs.

Some of the "Local Mob" of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that appear in the evenings to graze on the lawns on the streetside nature strip. Drivers need to be careful! Happy Fence Friday, everyone, and have a great weekend.

Fur seals on the beach below a lookout. Almost wiped out by the 19th century sealing trade, they now are protected and it's good to see their number increasing. Here's a musical link.

These are Grey-headed Flying Foxes. Despite the name, these are actually fruit bats and live on nectar and fruits. They are Australia's largest bats, with a wingspan of about a metre. They are classed as endangered but this year the local colony (right in the middle of town) has grown to about 100,000 - which does create more than a few problems! For an idea of what that means, multiply the image in the note by about 1000 to account for the surrounding area.

I live in Batemans Bay and there are suggestions it should now be renamed "Batman's Bay". :-) Which leads to the obvious musical link.

This New Zealand Fur Seal and pups were on the east coast. Almost hunted to extinction in the 1800s for their fur, these seals now have recovered and are commonly found along the coasts. Explored.
