Better on black? Explored.

The Barrier Highway, linking Broken Hill to the coast, largely follows the railway line. Far out in nowhere is the tiny rail settlement of Mannahill - a welcome stopping point in the vastness. View on black.

The French antarctic base of Dumont d'Urville is situated on a series of rocky islands. There are thousands of nesting Adelie penguins in the surrounding area. This panorama was taken looking westward along the coast from near the station, which is to the right. The note has a larger version of the image. Use the 'satellite view' if looking at the location.

Imagine you had just driven to the beach, only to find the tide out, not much sand, and overcast weather! Still, it was uncrowded and a pleasant view. Marrawah, NW Tasmania. Happy Fence Friday!

Unlike my first trip on it (see note), this time the Southern Ocean was benign. The squall line proved to be no more than the passing shower seen at left.

Stitched panorama from old negatives. Looking further south into the Prince Charles Mountains from Mt Lacey, the most southerly point I reached. Here we erected a trig point and took readings of distance with a tellurometer to a field party travelling to other peaks in the area. The distant mountain range is about 30km away, Mt Bechervaise is the large peak on the far left. (I suggest viewing on black)

Stitched panorama from old negatives (best viewed on black). Looking from Peak 7 south toward our destination, still some 48km (30 miles) distant. We established our base camp about 8km from the mountains, more or less in line between the left of the foreground rock outcrop and the large mountain massif above and to the right, about one third into the photo. This is the "Athos" range of the PCM, those with a literary inclination will not be surprised that the next two ranges are named "Porthos" and "Aramis" : after the Three Musketeers.

After several years of mixed intentions, I understand that there are now (2023) plans to rebuild the existing station. Panorama stitched from three film slides, looking south across the station and isthmus toward the main part of the island. (It is about 35km long and 5km wide). Partly because the old Kodachrome film was low ISO, most photos were taken on sunny "Kodachrome" days - sadly that is not representative of the usual weather. Macquarie has about 350 days yearly on which it rains (or drizzles), it is usually overcast, and often foggy. Strong winds, usually from the west, are almost constant. Best viewed large.

Stitched panorama. To all my Flickr friends who may visit here, I've taken out a membership and will see how things work out. So far I've been very impressed with the presentation and the way things can be configured. :)
