Lake George is not far from Canberra, Australia's capital city. It is an endorheic lake, as it has no outflow of water to rivers and oceans. (I didn't know that word either, it was on Wikipedia). Several small creeks and rivers feed water into it, but it is very shallow and often is dry, sometimes for years (when its area has had pasture, fences and sheep). Apparently the geology is interesting, the rivers etc once flowed to the sea but were blocked by rising mountain ranges over a million years ago. Best viewed large.

Although the Wollemi is usually referred to as a "pine" , it isn't. These trees were first discovered as recently as 1994 only 150km or so from the city of Sydney, having previously been known only as fossils - some dating back 200M years! The most recent known fossil was 4M years old. The Wollemi gains its name from the National Park where about 100 surviving trees were found in a hidden canyon: since then, they have been intensively propagated for parks and domestic gardens. These are images (also PiPs 1,2) of our potted example. Worryingly, the giant bushfires running in Australia are also through the Wollemi National Park (report screenshot PiP3) - I hope the last wild Wollemis are unaffected. UPDATE: I've now updated PiP3 with the latest report - the fire area is now larger than Greater London. The northern end of Lord Howe Island is fronted by cliffs over 200 metres high. (Second image in note).

Until the mid-20th century, poor roads along the coast meant that most freight was carried by coastal steamers. The heritage-listed Tathra wharf dates from the mid 1800s and is the only remaining coastal steamer wharf in NSW. To put this in its setting, my previous two images were taken on either side of the wharf. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.
