romanesque chancel arch from gough's addition of 1884. the northern arch to its right may have been intended for an organ but is now a vesty space open to the church. note the cross on the wall, one of many on all walls of the gallery, possibly having an apotropaic function for one of the sects using the church. gough's chice of style was rather unfashionable at this date: perhaps he was attempting to indicate a spurious historical progression , an historical in-joke for the ecclesiologist.

n.w. corner of the nave of 1840, with a nice little vault over the gallery stair. the cross is one of many attached to every wall. there are apparently several sects using this church; here in hackney they may have an apotropaic purpose?
