the church is the largest in the city, having been collegiate in the middle ages. little remains from then however, the church having been split for different congregations after the religious struggles of the c17. the west kirk in the nave was rebuilt by gibbs in 1752, the east kirk by archibald simpson in 1834, the tower and spire along with the east kirk and south transept in 1874 by william smith, leaving only the c12 north transept and c15 crypt under the apse relatively untouched

three seperate churches shared this one spire, built in 1843 by archibald simpson; a uniquely scottish solution saving money and leaving a great ecclesiastical legacy. however, one church has gone, one is a ruin, one a pub, and the remains are due to be destroyed, leaving only the spire buried in a boring badly designed glass office block, totally unsuited for its wonderful position and an insult to the city.
