a packed mix of late c19 and c20 tombs in the cemetery founded in 1885, like most jewish cemeteries inaccessible to the public. inscriptions are in english and hebrew, with hands raised in prayer and the torah scrolls evident in relief on some of the gravestones. it is a pity that these memorials cannot be easily compared with their islamic neighbours in tottenham park cemetery over the razor wire topped wall.

like a ghetto for the dead, the 1885 cemetery is hidden behind high walls with rolls of razor wire and many security cameras along the top, an ironic and dismal sight given jewish c20 history. such precautions are presumably to deter anti-semitic vandals, yet are not yet deemed necessary around tottenham park cemetery next door which is full of islamic graves, surely equally at risk from such xenophobes. openness and integration have not always saved minorities from attack, but the alternative is repellent and no way forward.

the graveyard presumably opened in 1856, when the land was bought, so the gravestones resembance to georgian designs must be due to conservatism. there must have been a jewish stone mason to get the hebrew right.

the early c19 stucco toy fort is part of the hospital that has been here since norman times. the graveyard dates from 1856.

the largest tomb is to lazarus simon magnus, who died in 1865, and shows a tree struck by lightening. his father paid for the land and synagogue here.
