Meadowside, Dundee The name “Howff” is an old word meaning a “meeting place”. Originally it was the gardens of the Grey Friars Monastery, (destroyed in 1547/8), granted to the town as a place of burial by Mary Queen of Scots in 1564. There are many references to the Howff being used as a meeting place, the first being used by the Bakers Trade in 1576. Each craft probably has its own special meeting place. Photographed from the Pends A. I.-Generated Article: St Leonards School is a private boarding and day school for pupils aged 4–19 in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. It was founded in 1877 as St Andrews School for Girls Company and adopted the St Leonards name upon moving to its current premises, the site formerly occupied by the University of St Andrews’ St Leonard’s College, in 1883. The school emerged from the St Andrews Ladies’ Educational Association which was established in 1868. One of the school’s founders was Lewis Campbell, chairman of the college council for many years and a Classics professor at St Andrews University who advocated for higher education for women.

St Andrews, St Johns Garden

23 Sep 2020 5 2 211
Plans to breathe new life into the medieval garden at the heart of St Andrews have been dashed after Fife Council denied necessary funding. St John’s Garden, which is owned by the University of St Andrews, was to be restored with the money. The University was working in conjunction with the Pilgrim Foundation of St Andrews to turn St John’s into a sensory garden. This sensory garden would be for the benefit of those who were blind, hard of sight or dealing with stress; the garden was to be transformed into an “oasis in the centre of the town” according to a University spokesperson. St Andrews, West Port

The West Port of St Andrews was built in 1587 as a monumental entrance to the city’s South Street. It was less a defensive structure than it was a symbol of civic pride. Its design is based on that of the Netherbow in Edinburgh – which, in turn, was modelled on Paris’s Porte Saint-Honore. The gate was extensively refurbished in 1843.
