'The Sage of the Barras'
Frankie Robertson (often affectionately called Frank Robertson, “The Sage of the Barras”) was a beloved Glasgow artist, poet, and street philosopher whose presence around the Barras became part of the market’s living folklore. Instantly recognisable in his tarboosh and bright, bohemian layers, he carried the air of an old‑world raconteur — generous with stories, sketches, and wry wisdom. His work, shown in small galleries and traded hand‑to‑hand at the market, reflected the humour, grit, and humanity of the East End he adored. With his passing, Glasgow loses one of its great characters: a gentle eccentric whose colour and kindness stitched him into the fabric of the city.
The above photograph shows Frankie sitting in St Enoch Square observing a skateboarding demonstration, a characteristic moment of the artist’s gentle presence in Glasgow’s public life.
