Scale

The wooden barracks section of Birkenau, with the train ramp to the left, and the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria at the treeline in the distance, seen from the tower of the Death Gate. Strangely, this was the most impressive part of the entire Auschwitz-Birkenau tour. I knew enough about the camps that the museum exhibits and buildings were already familiar - but what you don't get from reading books is an appreciation of the vastness of the place. In this case, the camera isn't exaggerating -- it really is as big as it looks here. It stretches all the way to the trees in the distance, and this view only shows about 2/3 of the camp's area.

Brick Barracks

Brick barracks, with the train ramp to the right, as seen from the tower of the Death Gate. The gas chambers and crematoria (now ruins) were at the end of the rail lines in the far distance.

Wooden Barracks

Bunks inside one of the wooden barracks, which were built on a design for portable horse barns -- you could see wingnuts in different places, holding segments of the buildings together.

Execution Wall

08 Sep 2008 128
Wall where firing squads executed certain prisoners in Auschwitz, in the courtyard between the jail/torture block and the block where women were subjected to medical experiments.

Shady

08 Sep 2008 168
Tree-lined avenue in Auschwitz. Prisoners were often forced to stand for hours (as punishment or torture, in summer or winter) in this street, in front of the kitchen building to the right.

Arrival Building

Somewhat disturbingly, the ticketing/visitor center where one enters Auschwitz is in the building where arriving prisoners were processed into the camp.

Inside, Outside

The camp kitchens to the left, the arrival processing building (and now, oddly, the ticketing/visitor center) to the right, at Auschwitz, seen from near the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" gate.

"Work Makes You Free"

The infamous gate into Auschwitz, through which prisoners left and returned to their work assignments in the nearby industrial area. (Curved to yellow to bring the lettering out somewhat -- it's a very difficult subject to photograph, being black against a dark background.)
