These were obviously taken from slightly different angles but the difference in the cliff's edge profile is still evident. I have seen a record that says the building was moved 15 metres, not 50. Either way it was a major undertaking as it sits on a large concrete slab.

Photos taken in the hour it takes for the 13X tourist trail bus to drop me off, get into Eastbourne, turn round and get back to Birling Gap. I alighted at Belle Tout, climbed the hill to the old lighthouse and walked down the other side to Birling Gap.

Now a boutique guest-house, apparently, this building has been moved back from the eroding cliff's edge on more than one occasion. It was replaced by the Beachy Head lighthouse in 1902. This one had been found to be hidden by fog or low cloud too frequently to be safe.

This is a fairly extreme telephoto shot, of the southern outskirts of East Dean, seen from a location on a part of the Belle Tout headland called, according to a National Trust sign, The Lookout. I am not quite sure what it looks out over as the sign is fairly low on the back of the headland.
