Sit. Watch the water flow out from and into the Indian Ocean. Look across to the Mandurah side. What could be better than this? Have a Happy Bench Monday, everyone.

A Happy Bench Monday to all. The ducks are enjoying the shade and don't seem too bothered about standing up.

A Happy Fence Friday to all. I hope your day is calm and that your weekend offers some respite from the current financial and political turmoil. This fence surrounds the King Carnival which has sat here next to the river for 70 years or so. It is to be demolished to make way for the construction of a brewery and restaurant. After all, we can’t let children’s fun stand in the way of profit, can we?

Contemplate

This bench sits by the estuary and faces Mandurah’s War Memorial, the white stone blocks across the river. The stones of the memorial rise from the water’s edge in the east and march upwards to the highest columns. At dawn on April 25th each year, the sun shines along the axis of the rising stones and hits the highest point, illuminating the pathway and also causing the shadows from the columns to point towards that highest point. April 25th is ANZAC Day in Australia and the Dawn Service, celebrated throughout the country, is a major part of that day, commemorating all Australians who have served in conflicts worldwide. HBM to everyone wherever you may be. The day of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli by Australian and New Zealander soldiers was 25th April 1915. More than 100 years later we still witness violence, horror and man's inhumanity to man. Not as clever as we like to think we are, are we? Sit on a bench, watch the world and think about how we're going to make things better.

Patience

Stingray Wharf, Mandurah. Not the best photo, I'm afraid. The scene was some distance from me and I was shaky having run/walked some distance on an increasingly hot morning, plus my iPhone skills are rather rudimentary. The bird on the right is, of course, an Australian pelican; the one on the left is, I think, a Nankeen heron (sometimes called a night heron in these parts). I took this and walked on ... They were all still there, in more or less the same positions when I passed by 45 minutes later on my return journey. Now THAT is patience. I hope they were all rewarded by a feed from the estuary waters. Gosh, I love this land.
