4 Princelet Street, Spitalfields, was built in 1723. Though it is no longer serving as a residence, over the past 300 years it has housed Huguenot silk weavers, the grandson of the founder of Truman Brewery, various laborers, a Polish Jew (a tailor) and his family among others. It is currently hired out for filming and events. I got to see the inside during an exhibition by Gagosian Gallery of the early works of Christo, which were staged throughout the house. This is one of my all-time favourite buildings in London and I walk by often. Here's a shot of the exterior:

Cosmic loo, The Cosmic House, Lansdowne Walk, Holland Park. This post-modern house was designed by Charles Jencks and his wife Maggie Keswick Jencks. It was the primary residence of the Jencks family from 1978 until Charles Jencks death in 2019 (Maggie, for whom the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres are named, died in 1995). The house is Grade I listed.

Bathroom After 1

24 Jun 2013 4 296
The rattan panels I wanted to hang to hide the laundry area didn't work (I bought the wrong track and the panels wouldn't have stacked out of the way properly), so I went to The Mercantile and got a new batik bedspread, which I hung on the old rod and rings. New towels from Target. The whole bathroom looks so fab that I often just stand in it and look at everything.

Bathroom After 2

24 Jun 2013 310
Bertch vanity (it has drawers!) with custom glass top. Toto Drake II toilet -- comfort height, 1.2 gallons per flush. Gerber faucet, towel bar and toilet roll holder. I bought the soap dispenser pump on Etsy and attached it to an old Mason jar.

Laundry After

24 Jun 2013 289
All neat and tidy. I bought a plastic washing machine pan to protect the floor should the 30-year-old washer decide to spring a leak.

New Fan & Light

24 Jun 2013 254
The ugly popcorn ceiling is gone, replaced with a skim coat of plaster. The horrid fan/light combo is gone, replaced with Kichler light fixture and Nutone (energy star) fan.

New Floor in Bathroom

24 Jun 2013 273
I continued the same flooring into the hall and the bathroom.

New Floor in Foyer

24 Jun 2013 1 301
The flooring is Armstrong Alterna luxury vinyl tile in Durango: Deep Gold. The tiles are 12x12 and they are grouted. It feels warm, is easy to stand on, is very low-maintenance, and looks fab. I still need to have the walls in the foyer painted later this summer.

Mass MoCA Bathroom (Self Portrait)

Every trip to MASS MoCA needs to include a stop in the basement bathroom, which preserves a lot of the original stuff from when the building was the Sprague Electric Company. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Painted!

08 Jun 2013 2 301
Painting of the bathroom was finished yesterday. The paint is C2 Amontillado (it's made in Massachusetts by a collective, and is low-VOC). Today, I re-installed the shelving in the laundry area. Next: I need to clean out the floor of the foyer closet and remove all the furniture and assorted junk from the foyer. New flooring goes in Tuesday.

Hallway Before

14 Apr 2013 254
This is around the corner from the foyer photo. Door to the bathroom is on the right. I'm tearing up the two different types of crap sheet vinyl and having vinyl tile put down (one pattern throughout the foyer, hall and bathroom).

Laundry Before

The clutter behind Ganesh. This mess will be hidden behind sliding rattan panels hung from a track on the ceiling. I bought the panel system at Ikea many years ago and never got around to putting up.

Bathroom Before 1

The original 1986 fixtures. The batik Ganesh hanging here is a bedspread, not a shower curtain. It hides the washing machine (circa 1982) and the related cleaning product clutter.

Water Stain on Bathroom Ceiling

14 Apr 2013 287
The mixer valve in the upstairs tub leaked behind the wall and water came down through the ceiling of the bathroom below. This was the start of my bathroom remodeling adventure and money pit.

Bathroom Before 2

14 Apr 2013 287
After the ceiling is fixed, I'm having a new fan and vanity light installed and then the bathroom will be repainted. Then the new flooring, toilet (lo-flow) and vanity come in. The two prints on the wall will stay. One is a James Cauty print called Global Warming, the other (seen in the mirror) is an Adams of Rye letterpress print of the Aardvark Manifesto 2010. The mirror and the washing machine will stay also. Everything else goes, including the finger towels that came from my mother's house. FYI, she died in 1980.
