If I had to build this kind of machine today, I'd use 2.5'' disks and could probably fit 12 of these in just 3x 5.25'' slots. Much smaller case, less heat, fewer fans, smaller UPS. And probably half the cost.

Labeling the wires is a must! You don't want to find out later, that the controller maybe doesn't identify the drives by serial number and the array is f*cked up.

Here it runs in a normal 33MHz PCI slot. Not good for the bandwidth, but there was enough time for incremental backups during the night.

Nothing special. It just synced the data from the HP DL385 using rsync and dirvish . I wrote some scripts that did MD5 sums and automatic test, just to be sure. There's a total of 10 fans in this system and it is still easy on the ears. Good fans.
