Backyard Snow

10 Dec 2005 160
Three views of our back yard, on Palmer Avenue, in Kalamazoo. Virginia Brown built that redwood fence to keep our baseballs out of her yard. This pic's obviously a DOF play. Came out fairly well, methinks. January 1972 or thereabouts; shot with my Minolta SR-T 101.

Palmer Avenue Back Yard

10 Dec 2005 168
Three views of our back yard, on Palmer Avenue, in Kalamazoo. Virginia Brown built that redwood fence to keep our baseballs out of her yard. The bushes are forsythias.... January 1972 or thereabouts; shot with my Minolta SR-T 101.

Pink House

02 Dec 2005 135
Another photo from late 1971 or early 1972: The view from our front porch on Palmer Avenue. Dad grew up on this block, and both his sister (in the house at the left in this photo) and his parents (a couple houses down the block) were still there when we moved to the neighborhood. So it was sort of a family enclave. If I can locate appropriate photographs, I'll give you a little tour. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the name of the folks in the pink house. (Debbie? Dick? Can you help?) I do recall that he was a skinny little thing, while she was the widest person I've ever encountered. Good neighbors, except for the pink siding. Another SR-T 101 photo.

The Redwood Fence

10 Dec 2005 186
Three views of our back yard, on Palmer Avenue, in Kalamazoo. Virginia Brown built that redwood fence to keep our baseballs out of her yard. The tree's a butternut. Notice the picnic table in the background. January 1972 or thereabouts; shot with my Minolta SR-T 101.

Hatti and Rog Touch Feet

08 Apr 2010 164
Mom and Dad, making contact across the living room early in 1972. This is the interior of our house at 1318 Palmer in Kalamazoo. I routinely take better pictures than this, but there aren't many I like better. Today would have been Mom's 84th birthday.

Richard Paul

28 Nov 2005 107
My brother, Dick ( Kalamazoo Richard ), round 'bout his eighteenth birthday (late 1971 or early 1972). A little fuzzy, and he looks so young . Note the peace symbol where his unit patch belongs.... Taken with my then-new Minolta SR-T 101. This negative was damaged in the camera (the whole roll of film's a mess) and I don't believe the developer printed this frame, so I'm pretty sure Richard's never seen this one. Sorry about the dirty scan, but the scratches seemed worth keeping.

Richard's Built In Bed

19 Jan 2006 118
Another previously-unseen photo of Kalamazoo Richard . Like this one , the developer never printed the picture, because it came from a damaged roll.... When we lived on Palmer, Dick & I shared an upstairs room with built-in beds. That's where he's sitting. Christmas or thereabouts, 1971/72. Camera: Minolta SR-T 101

Richard and the Little Cabin

19 Jan 2006 107
It's Kalamazoo Richard 's birthday. Happy Birthday, bro! I thought I'd honor that event by posting a few photographs. Here he is, at age 18, frolicking in the yard at our cottage on Wall Lake in Delton, MIchigan. Spring, 1972. We'd had an ice storm; as you can see, it did lots of damage. We'd spend the day cleaning that up. The cottage was one of two our parents owned; they'd originally been rental units constituting half of a small lakeside resort. Mom & Dad were about to sell our Palmer Avenue home, and we'd live on the lake until moving into the Wellington Road place in December. Dick & I shared this little cottage; Mom, Dad, & Debbie stayed next door in the somewhat larger, and better-equipped, place. ---------------- I drove by Wall Lake a few weeks back, and was quite surprised to discover that the cottages were still standing. Many of their neighbors have been replaced with more substantial places; I expect these to eventually meet that fate.

A Ghost of Winters Past

Taken in January of 1972 at 1318 Palmer Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In my memory that January was much like this past one. Taken with my SR-T 101. At the time I was back from Vietnam but not yet out of the army.
