Tractor

A rather larger John Deere. The soybeans are harvested, so it's time to turn the soil. I imagine they'll follow that by planting winter wheat. South of Mulliken, Michigan.

Barn, with Sky

This barn and shed are on the grounds of the Gilmore Car Museum , north of Gull Lake and west of Hickory Corners, Michigan. In my memory the farm was more farm than museum, and (as you can see) they're still farming the land which isn't part of the exhibit space.

Soybeans and Sky

Soybean Field, with Silos

A year ago today. The beans look about the same today, but there's less color in the trees.

Silos

A couple miles south of home. Probably my favorite local farmyard. Photo taken from my bike.

Silos

At the north end of downtown Grand Ledge. The elevator's abandoned, now, but the oldest structures on the lot evidently date from the 1870s. This operation became obsolete when ADM built a rather larger grain plant a couple miles away. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for December 14 .

Elevator

A few years back this farmer took out an already-elaborate conveyor system over his grain silos and replaced it with this setup. I've long wanted to get a good photo of it. This was shot from the front yard of his neighbor, which I generally try not to do, but this was the right angle for the photo I wanted. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for November 17 .

The Woodbury Elevator

31 Oct 2013 2 132
Many of the local grain elevators have closed down in the past few years . To all appearances my neighbor farmers have moved their business to this operation, or to ADM's north of Grand Ledge. By prairie standards the Woodbury elevator's not a large operation. Around here it's pretty impressive. ========== Had a couple specific photographs in mind for last Halloween's 366 Snaps pic, one of which was this one. But there was a larger purpose, too. This was a scouting trip, looking for photographs "beyond Sebewa." I took lots of photographs on this drive, of buildings and farmland and details and landscapes. Many are oddly composed, but most are interesting regardless. In the end, I posted a Halloween pic to 366 Snaps. It was taken very near where I took this photo. A fun photo excursion, all in all. ========== Obviously I'm discussing personal preferences in this section. Reasonable people certainly disagree with me about this. So be it. More tomorrow , I expect. When I bought the Sigma lens I had a notion that I'd convert to the "ideal" of carrying a collection of fixed-focus lenses with my D70. When I bought the D300 I gave away the D70 and my only remaining zoom, which left me with this lens and the 300 mm. That's not a good set. But I figured I'd fix it eventually. As things worked out my next purchase was the 80-200, then about a year later I added the 16-85. Those two convinced me not to pursue the set-of-primes solution; they meet most of my needs. But gosh these pix show why you'd want to shoot exclusively with prime lenses. This is a terrific piece of glass. As I've noted, on November 1 of last year I listed the Sigma 50 mm for sale on Amazon. It sold almost immediately, and I recovered most of the purchase price. Mostly I don't miss it. ========== This photograph is an outtake--well, an alternate crop--from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Farm, Boyer Road

Two versions of the same photo for today's outtakes. This is my preferred version, but the JPG conversion does bad things to that sky, even if I don't sharpen the photo with unsharp mask. I got the photo-a-day pix in fairly early a year ago. I didn't really have anything in mind, just "wander around the local farms and photograph something." By this point in the year, that was pretty much my default method when I didn't have a specific photograph planned. This is one of my favorite local farms. A few days earlier I'd taken a similarly-framed photo, but before the soybeans were harvested. I posted that last week . In monochrome, with a wider perspective, there's a stark look to the scene that the earlier photo doesn't have. ========== I also posted two versions of the 366 Snaps shot. Since the color version offers an explanation I don't see any need to repeat that. ========== This photograph is a non-outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . A second crop of the day's outtake, with most of the sky removed. Explanation here . This version shows the strength of the Sigma 50mm as a general-purpose lens. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for October 20 .

Farmyard

More or less at Sebewa.... ========== A year ago was a get-ready-for-vacation day, taken up mostly with laundry and lawn mowing. So I didn't devote much effort to the daily photo shoot. Shot a few pics around the yard, none of which seemed satisfactory, then two or three at the post office which were outright awful. So I made a quick excursion to Sebewa, intending to capture the downtown barn, with the photo above as an opportunity shot on my way out. ========== Unloading the camera and checking 'em in Bibble Pro, I decided the best image was a busy garden view, with our porch in the background. So I went with that for 366 Snaps . 'Twas the right decision. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Barn, Gone

21 Jul 2013 2 146
North of town, on Tupper Lake Road near Charlotte Highway. It collapsed over a decade ago, and most of the ruin's been cleared away. The thing is that this barn, one of the prettier ones nearby, looked (from the outside) like it was well maintained. Then one day it fell in. Sometimes you can't trust your eyes. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for July 21 .
