Sandhill Cranes against the sky, at Michigan Audubon's Baker Sanctuary.
I'm pleased with the composition on this one, but am unhappy with the detail. Once again I was using the Nikon V2 and the 300 mm lens, but still wasn't nailing the focus.
Still learnin'. Things will eventually sort out, I expect.

Another gull chasing thrown food at our hotel in St. Ignace.
Not quite as sharp as I'd like, but I like it all the same....

Best LARGE .
A kite boarder (surfer?) at play, during the 20th Great Lakes Kite Festival at Grand Haven State Park. I took dozens of pictures of this guy yesterday; this is by far the best photo, though hardly his most impressive jump. I rather like those gaudy pantaloons.
The kite show continues today, by the way; if you can make it, it's definitely worth a trip. And a great excuse to walk the beach.

Another pic from Sunday's excursion to the Maple River State Game Area. Once again the ISO's too high, but it's less obtrusive.
Just wanted to mention that our feet got wet; there are several places where the water's overflowed the levees.

This is grainy, and there's an unfortunately-placed branch in there. But you gotta take what you get, sometimes.

I went outside; these guys fled. Along with a couple hundred of their friends.
Sandhill Cranes Overhead
03 Nov 2010 |
|
There's always an element of luck with photography. That Gary (cminer52) was able to capture hundreds of sandhills in an overhead shot was partly good planning--he knew where to get the photo--but he still needed the cooperation of the cranes to make the shot. We were seeing similar numbers of birds at Big Marsh Lake, but only a few were directly overhead and my massed-grouping photos showed them coming in across the lake . Different perspectives, and different locations, but both photos show the main action.
Not that I lacked for overhead-shot opportunities, as this photo shows. But to duplicate Gary's shot I'd have needed to be standing somewhere else.

Gonna bury you in birds this morning!
The light was gorgeous a year ago, and I gave my cameras a workout. For 300 Snaps I tried to get a bird-in-flight photo--which means I kept snapping until the bird moved , over and over.
This pic worked out nicely. So did the 366 Snaps photo.
And, just incidentally, I got a bunch of good songbird portraits. Including another of this bird .
==========
This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
Number of project photos taken: 197
Title of " roll :" Birds, mostly [wasn't that yesterday's title?]
Other photos taken on 5/17/2012: The "daily flower census" mostly consisted of bird photos ( here's one ), but showed a garden coming into its glory with Spirea (of course), Iris, Painted Daisies, Snow on the Mountain's spindly flowers, and the Columbine.
Joan and I went out for supper. We returned to a neighborhood littered with emergency vehicles .

Posting this a day late: Had an equipment failure yesterday. All better today; thanks for asking.
This day's photos were a deliberate effort to capture birds in flight. I had some success, but wasn't really satisfied.

This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
Number of project photos taken: 91
Title of " roll :" Sparrows & Starlings
Other photos taken on 5/7/2012: The Daily Flower Census shows that we had Irises, Columbines, and Cranesbill open a year back. And that our flowers-in-planters had largely survived the easy 2011-12 winter.
